Facebook partners with UN to bring internet access to refugee camps

In a speech to the UN on Saturday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced he is working with United Nations to enable refugees[难民] from the Syrian civil war[叙利亚内战] to access the Internet so they can more easily communicate while seeking resettlement. Zuckerberg kicked off[拉开帷幕,拉开序幕] a campaign to ensure internet access is universal[普遍的；通用的；宇宙的；全世界的；全体的] by 2020, saying internet connections are vital for refugees[难民] to get better support from the aid community and help maintain links to[保持联系] family and loved ones

Bringing Internet access to refugee camps[难民营] is just one aspect of the effort. Facebook has also been building satellites and aircraft that can beam[发送；以梁支撑；用…照射；流露] Internet connections to remote villages and towns. Google is engaged in a similar project, using high-altitude balloons[高空气球]. Critics of these programs say the companies stand to benefit from expanding pools of people using their services, which primarily make money from advertising. The overall connectivity campaign signed on[开始广播；签约雇用] by a host of[许多] celebrities[名人] like U2’s Bono, Charlize Theron and Bill and Melinda Gates, calls on governments, businesses and innovators to bring the Internet to the some 4 billion people who now do not have access.
